Milan & Maureen Ilich Foundation Gives $2.5 million to BC Cancer Foundation!

The BC Cancer Agency and BC Cancer Foundation are celebrating an incredible $2.5 million gift from the Milan & Maureen Ilich Foundation.

Since 1995, the Milan & Maureen Ilich Foundation has given over $3 million to the BC Cancer Foundation, and this most recent gift will continue to expand the BC Cancer Agency's capacity for pre-clinical research. This will have a direct impact on cancer care, meaning better, quicker options and improved outcomes for thousands of patients across B.C.

The Milan & Maureen Ilich Foundation's generosity will enable the acquisition of a 3D CT imaging and radiation therapy machine and a micro SPECT imager to advance preclinical research for difficult to treat cancers and an Illumina High Sequencer 2000 to enable the study of genetic mutations responsible for cancer. Together, these pieces of equipment will accelerate personalized medicine options for B.C. patients. The gift will also provide support for the newly-named Milan & Maureen Ilich Innovation Support Fund for the next two years. The Fund enables critical small equipment to be purchased, so that BC Cancer Agency researchers can advance life-saving projects at centres around the province.

Get Ready to Bust a Move in 2013!

As we ring in 2013 and make our New Year resolutions, the chart-topping pick is weight loss, closely followed by eating healthier. Tommy Europe, Canada's most sought-after fitness coach, says there's no better way to commit to a "healthier you" resolution than to sign up for Bust a Move for Breast Health and make a difference while getting fit.

Europe is taking his drill-sargeant fitness training tactics beyond the gym to help give life-saving breast cancer research at the BC Cancer Agency an extra uplift. He suggests training at least two or three times per week in preparation for taking part in each of the six fitness sessions: yoga, bootcamp, hip hop, zumba, bollywood and tabata.

Keeping extra pounds off and embracing an active lifestyle is not only good for your overall health - it can also reduce the risk of breast cancer.

Europe will lead his signature one-hour bootcamp session at Bust a Move on April 13. So why not join Tommy and hundreds of other participants to make a difference in the lives of over 3,200 British Columbians who will be diagnosed with breast cancer this year.

BC Cancer Foundation Celebrates $100,000 Gift in Abbotsford!

The BC Cancer Agency Abbotsford Centre ended 2012 on a high note, with a $100,000 gift in support of cutting-edge radiation therapy equipment from local philanthropist Dave Holmberg.

Mr. Holmberg's generosity was inspired by his own journey with cancer: a survivor himself, Mr. Holmberg tragically lost his son David Jr. to brain cancer just two years ago. They were both treated at the Abbotsford Centre, where David Jr.'s participation in a clinical trial enabled him to spend a few extra months with his family.

Experiencing the impact of research and care on their own family led Mr. Holmberg and his wife Lee to make this generous gift for an upgrade to a key piece of radiation therapy equipment that will provide greater accuracy in less time for the more than 1,000 patients who receive radiation therapy in Abbotsford each year.

Thank you for your Messages of Hope

Over the holiday season, the BC Cancer Foundation received over 2,500  messages of hope from donors across the province.

The messages were displayed at the BC Cancer Agency's six centres in Prince George, Kelowna, Abbotsford, Surrey and Vancouver - thank you all for bringing hope and optimism to cancer patients and their families this holiday season!

Healthy Tips for the New Year

Now that the indulgent holiday season is behind us, it's time to start the New Year off right with these four tips for eating healthy:

1. Instead of unhealthy carbs like sugars, white bread, white rice and potatoes, choose low-glycemic-index carbs like quinoa and whole-grain breads.

2. Instead of omega-6 fatty acids from vegetable oils, eat more omega-3 fatty acids found in salmon, flax seeds, pumpkin seeds and walnuts.

3. Instead of pop and fruit drinks, eat fresh fruit like apples and pears.

4. Instead of red meat, choose nuts and chicken - both excellent sources of healthy protein.
