BC Cancer Agency Receives $10 million for Lymphoid Cancer Research
BC Cancer Agency researchers are poised to accelerate lymphoid cancer research and care, thanks to an investment of $10 million to bring cutting-edge personalized treatments to patients in B.C. and beyond.
The joint investment from Genome British Columbia, the BC Cancer Foundation, Genome Canada and the Canadian Institutes of Health Research will dramatically change how lymphoid cancer patients are diagnosed and treated.
Genomic research has proven that each patient's cancer is distinct. Under the leadership of the BC Cancer Agency's Drs. Marco Marra, Joseph Connors and Randy Gascoyne (pictured above), new lymphoid cancer treatments will begin with the patient's unique genetic characteristics and result in more effective, customized therapies at a reasonable cost.

2013 Ride to Conquer Cancer: An Update
It was with heavy hearts that we concluded this year's Ride to Conquer Cancer. On the second day of the Ride, a tragic accident claimed the life of 16-year-old Xavier Pelletier of Victoria who was riding alongside his mother and his uncle, a cancer survivor.
Strong bonds form between Ride participants in the months of training and fundraising leading up to the event. Every rider and crew member was deeply affected by the news. In the past several weeks the BC Cancer Foundation has received an outpouring of kind messages and condolences from the Ride community for Xavier's family and friends.

As it was for Xavier, the Ride is incredibly personal for the 2,642 British Columbians who choose to participate because their lives have been touched by cancer. They ride to honour and remember loved ones, family members, friends and colleagues because they share a common goal: to achieve a world free from cancer. In the midst of tragedy, they continued to embody this hope and optimism. Over the past five years, the Ride to Conquer Cancer has raised $50 million for cancer research in B.C. The BC Cancer Foundation thanks each one of you for being our partners in discovery.

Baking for Cancer Research
On June 24, 11-year-old philanthropist Natasha Klass brought her delicious baked goods to the BC Cancer Agency Vancouver Centre to raise funds for research.

Natasha recently lost her grandmother to ovarian cancer, while her other grandmother is currently facing pancreatic cancer. Together with her mother, Tracy, and great-aunt Angela, Natasha baked an array of tasty treats, raising an incredible $618.45 for cancer research. Natasha's efforts are a great example of the important role young people play in helping the BC Cancer Foundation to achieve our goal of a world free from cancer. Congratulations, Natasha!

The BC Cancer Foundation has partnered with Lung Cancer Canada, the Princess Margaret Hospital Foundation and the Terry Fox Research Institute (TFRI) to provide $1.5 million support for an innovative TFRI study.
The study is investigating screening options for individuals at high risk for lung cancer and testing the effectiveness of a web-based risk assessment model and breath and blood tests as first steps for detecting early lung cancer.
This funding boost will enable clinical investigators to extend the study to June 2015. Researchers expect to have preliminary findings within the year that will lead to life-saving improvements to care and offer affordable solutions for the health care system.
