DECEMBER 2013

Happy Holidays from the BC Cancer Foundation

Doug NelsonAs another calendar year draws to a close, I am so thankful for the generosity of more than 100,000 BC Cancer Foundation donors across the province. Because of you, we've seen incredible progress in cancer research this year: the BC Cancer Agency celebrated world-first discoveries in lymphoid cancer, the development of a new prostate cancer drug, a deeper understanding of the genetic diversity of cancer and new technology to better detect lung cancer.

This year, our donors rallied tremendous support in their communities: from the $2.3 million raised for lung cancer research at the annual Inspiration Gala and $10.4 million at the fifth annual Ride to Conquer Cancer to countless community events, bake sales and gifts in honour and in memory of loved ones, our donors continue to inspire hope across the province.

This year, the BC Cancer Foundation partnered with Bob and Diane Conconi to embark on our first ever matching campaign: 10,000 gifts were doubled by donors around the province for a total of more than $3 million. We also celebrated the culmination of the Inspire the World campaign on Vancouver Island, with the opening of the Alex & Jo Campbell Patient and Family Support Centre.

In November, our commitment to our donors was re-affirmed when the BC Cancer Foundation received accreditation from Imagine Canada, which evaluates the compliance, transparency and accountability of charities and nonprofits across the country.

I know I speak for all my BC Cancer Foundation colleagues when I say that the stories of hope and optimism that we hear from patients, families, clinicians and researchers throughout the year remind us daily of the importance of our cause. Your commitment brings us one step closer to achieving our vision of a world free from cancer.

I invite you to keep this momentum going by supporting cancer research as part of your holiday giving. December is a meaningful time to come together to celebrate with loved ones, friends and family.

Douglas Nelson

On November 7, the BC Cancer Foundation's annual Inspiration Gala guests raised an astounding $2.3 million for lung cancer research at the BC Cancer Agency.

Many of the 400 guests were inspired to give back because they had been personally affected by the disease, including Pearl Toh, who made a generous gift of $900,000.

Funds raised through the Inspiration Gala will launch the Lung Cancer Research Initiative to help scientists and clinicians better understand and treat lung cancer and provide much needed support to advance earlier detection, diagnosis and effective treatment options for lung cancer patients throughout the province.

Over nine years, the Inspiration Gala has invested $15 million to accelerate research in lung, pancreatic, breast, ovarian, brain, colorectal and lymphoid cancers and personalized medicine at the BC Cancer Agency.
